Didn't the traditional male parent stereotype portray a rather distant, uninvolved figure who though capable of dealing blows did so in the name of discipline and often at mum's discretion?  Hardly inspiring or flattering, but not a sinister, predatory figure either. It seems our image has deteriorated: unlikely nurturers, not to be trusted around the innocence of youth.
